There is no insoluble contradiction between faith and science, because there cannot be two kinds of truth. [159]

There is not one truth of faith that is in competition with another truth of science. There is only one truth, to which both faith and scientific reason refer. God intended reason, with which we can recognize the rational structures of the world, just as he intended faith. That is why the Christian faith demands and promotes the (natural) sciences. Faith exists so that we might know things that are not apparent to reason yet are real above and beyond reason. Faith reminds science that it is supposed to serve creation and not set itself up in place of God. Science must respect human dignity instead of violating it.

(Vatican Radio) Benedictine Abbott, Timothy Wright, spiritual director at the Pontifical Beda College in Rome explains the events we commemorate on Holy Thursday.
Holy Thursday – Abbott Wright explains – is the day of Jesus’ last supper with his disciples. It was a very special meal, for them and for him, and he wanted to make sure that it endured. So he did a number of things: he reminded those around the table that this was going to be his last supper, it was going to be a definitive moment, and that he was not going to partake fully of it until he had been through the process of dying and rising. They didn’t understand it. Who would? They celebrated the meal in the traditional Jewish way as a Passover meal remembering the events of the exodus – that is they were slaves in Egypt being brought out by their leader Moses through the Red Sea, the parting of the waves, then through the desert eventually to the promised land. And throughout the whole of that journey they were pursued by the Egyptian army and they managed to get across thanks to the intervention of God.That event was traditional for the Jews and has been so ever since. Christ took it up as his last meal and he did a number of things that were particular. He took bread and said “this is my body” – no one really understood what that really meant. He took wine and said “this is my blood,” a new covenant for the forgiveness of sins, a new life. But before he did that, he sat his disciples down and said: “right – I’m going to wash your feet”.
Washing feet is a very menial task. A sign of the host welcoming the guest. A sign of recognition saying “you are important to me”. You are important to me because of who you are, not because of what you have done for me. You are important to me not because you are a sinner or a saint, but because in you there is the unique presence of God. And that is why I am showing to you that this is my service of you, my 12 apostles – and one of you is going to betray me – no matter, I will wash your feet because you are going to be the leaders, and it is you who then have to wash other people’s feet. Service is at the heart of the Christian Gospel. My service is to die and to rise and give new life. Your service is to go forward and to wash people’s feet to show this is the love that really counts

Recognizing that “the Word of the living God” cannot possibly contain errors of any kind, the Catholic Church has always taught that the whole of Scripture was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that, since God is the principal Author of Scripture, the books of the Bible cannot contain any errors at all. This teaching on complete inerrancy, affirmed by Sacred Scripture, the Church Fathers and Doctors, plus the councils of Florence (1431-1443), Trent (1545-1563) and Vatican I (1869-1870), was also reiterated by Leo XIII in Providentissimus Deus (1893):

Confused catechesis characterizes YOUCAT’s attempts to deal with the delicate topic of human sexuality. Question 65 of YOUCAT explains:

Therefore it is a painful experience for many homosexually oriented people that they do not feel erotically attracted to the opposite sex and necessarily miss out on the physical fruitfulness of the union between man and woman according to human nature and the divine order of creation. Nevertheless, God often leads souls to himself along unusual paths: A lack, a loss, or a wound—if accepted and affirmed—can become a springboard for throwing oneself into the arms of God…

The ambiguities in this paragraph will create enormous uncertainty as the text does not differentiate between same sex attraction and sinful homosexual acts of behavior. YOUCAT states that: “A lack, a loss, or a wound—if accepted and affirmed—can become a springboard for throwing oneself into the arms of God”—as if the young person with same sex attraction ought to “accept and affirm” his or her condition as “a springboard for throwing himself into the arms of God”! But no clear indication is given of exactly what it means to accept and affirm same sex attraction, and this terminology can obviously be used in an attempt to excuse immoral behavior. But God does not wish for anyone to sin and He does not wish for evil to be done so that good may come of it. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states of homosexuality:

Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.” They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved… Homosexual persons are called to chastity.<sup style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> (10)

In Question 409, it tells young Catholics that “The Church does not demonize masturbation, but she warns against trivializing it.” Here again, vague terminology is apparent and many readers are bound to interpret the statement about not “demonizing” certain sexual behaviors as meaning that they are not a serious sin. The bitter irony of this statement is that by NOT calling masturbation a grave sin, YOUCAT DOES trivialize it! YOUCAT’s treatment of this topic contrasts starkly with the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church which lists masturbation, fornication, pornography, and homosexual acts as “grave sins against chastity.” <sup style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">(11) TheCatechism of the Catholic Church states that “Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.”<sup style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><sup style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> (12)

In Question 421, the authors also recommend Natural Family Planning (NFP). But in the next sentence, rather than stating that the Church rejects all means of contraception, the text adds that “the Church rejects all artificial means of contraception” (emphasis added). With this confusing phrase, the text could be read to mean that there are non-artificial (i.e., natural) means of contraception, and that NFP is a form of non-artificial contraception! Young people could mistakenly infer that contraception is acceptable, as long as it is “non-artificial” contraception — and their whole attitude towards NFP will be distorted.

YOUCAT’s implicit presentation of NFP as “non-artificial contraception” recasts it as primarily a method of avoiding conception rather than as a way of insuring healthy conception in a spirit of generosity. The is all the more regrettable in a catechism for young people many of whom will imbibe the contraceptive attitude without even realizing it. This treatment differs markedly from the Catechism of the Catholic Church which states that “every action which, whether in anticipation of the conjugal act, or in its accomplishment, or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render procreation impossible” is intrinsically evil.”<sup style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> (13)

Yet all of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church — and more than nineteen hundred years of magisterial teaching — have emphasized the spiritual headship of the husband and father in the Christian family. At a time when male moral leadership in the Church and in society is desperately needed, the failure of YOUCAT’s authors to even mention the traditional teaching of the Church on the spiritual leadership of husbands and fathers is a lost opportunity.

Question 391 supports organ transplantation after “a certain determination of death." This sounds reasonable, but the sad reality is that many organ transplants take place only after “a certain determination” of “brain death” — which is not the same as true death. Indeed, there are certain organs that can only be “harvested” while the patient is still alive. Many patients declared “brain dead” still have a heartbeat, pulse, and exchange of gas through their lungs! St. Thomas Aquinas, the great synthesizer of the patristic legacy, summed up the creation/providence distinction in the Summa Theologica by stating that: “In the works of nature, creation does not enter, but is presupposed to the work of nature.”<sup style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> (23) In other words, natural processes and operations are not themselves instances of God’s creative activity; rather, they show his Providence at work in maintaining his prior work of creation, which is presupposed by the way these processes and operations now take place.

Moreover, YOUCAT’s editors misrepresent the overwhelming majority of the Fathers who interpreted the days of Genesis 1 as natural days by implying that they arrived at this interpretation “to calculate the earth’s age.” To anyone familiar with the patristic writings, this implication is absurd, since the Fathers interpreted “yom” or “day” in Genesis 1 according to its literary context — not for the sake of calculating the age of the earth.

St. John Chrysostom expressed the common view of all of the Fathers and Doctors when he wrote that:

It is for this reason that he begins to speak thus: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth,” as if calling out to us all with a loud voice: it is not by the instruction of men that I say this; He Who called them (heaven and earth) out of non-being into being—it is He Who has roused my tongue to relate of them. What an absurd idea!

According to the theistic version of the Big Bang hypothesis, God created the initial matter and energy at the moment of the Big Bang and then allowed them to develop naturally within the framework of the natural laws that He established at the beginning of creation. But, while this hypothesis allows God to create the matter and energy necessary for the universe to develop naturally, it denies the special creation of all of the different living things, including plants, animals, and man — in contradiction to all of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church. Moreover, in recent years numerous experts in astronomy and other relevant disciplines have rejected the Big Bang and biological evolution as hypotheses without evidence and against the facts. (29)

On the contrary, the unanimous teaching of all of the Fathers and Doctors is that God created all of the different kinds of creatures perfect according to their natures, in a state of harmony with man and with each other, and that all deformity and disease was a consequence of the Original Sin.

This is nothing more than a re-emergence of Modernism that has been repeatedly condemned. For example, in 1907, St. Pius X condemned the proposition that “scientific progress demands that the concept of Christian doctrine concerning God, creation, revelation, the Person of the Incarnate Word and Redemption be re-adjusted.”<sup style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> (35) This view also ignores the mandates of Humani Generis not to treat evolution theory as a certain proven fact, and to consider the evidence both for and against the theory.

Let us not forget that the most sorrowful tragedies and developments of the 20th century had their basis in evolutionary thought; these include eugenics, birth control, abortion, Nazism, Communism, two world wars, and the rise of Modernism, post-modernism, humanism and New Age thought now dominating the West. As St. Thomas Aquinas said, “an error in the beginning is an error indeed.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that:

It concerns the very foundations of human and Christian life: for it makes explicit the response of the Christian faith to the basic question that men of all times have asked themselves: “Where do we come from?” “Where are we going?” “What is our origin?” “What is our end?”…The two questions, the first about the origin and the second about the end are inseparable. They are decisive for the meaning and orientation of our life and actions.”<sup style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> (36)

Since the age of the Apostles and the early Fathers, the Catholic Church has never failed to defend the doctrines of creation or inerrancy…that is, until so many fell under the spell of Darwinism and its false scientific claims which strongly contributed to the rise of the Modernist heresy. It is the duty of all Catholics to defend the doctrine of inerrancy and the full doctrine of creation against any sort of compromise. If we now fail to do so, the problematic statements in YOUCAT will soon become “official Church doctrine” in the eyes of millions.

While not as serious as previous objections, it is nevertheless observed that in its choice of sources, YOUCAT cannot be compared to any other catechism in the history of the Catholic Church. Many non-Catholic and some anti-Catholic authors are quoted, sometimes giving the impression that they are on par with the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, or are somehow more in tune with the Catholic youth than the great Saints and Doctors of the past. Yet the quotations from modern authors are often vague.

YOUCAT’s seemingly indiscriminate preference for modern authors jars most when the statements of quoted authors are confusing. For example, on page 151, Michel Quoist is quoted as saying that “someone who loves a neighbor allows him to be as he is, as he was, and as he will be.” On reflection, this statement is completely unacceptable from a Catholic point of view. If my neighbor is a long-time drug dealer or a human trafficker, I do not love him by allowing him to be “as he is, as he was, and as he will be.” No doubt the author had some profound meaning in mind, but the quotation does not give any clue as to what that profound meaning — compatible with Catholic teaching — might be. In another place, on page 252, YOUCAT reflects on the quality of “shame,” and the authors quote the anti-Christian philosopher Nietzche’s statement: “Shame exists wherever there is a mystery.” Like Quoist’s statement quoted above, the statement has an alluring air of incomprehensibility, but it does nothing to reinforce or clarify Catholic doctrine on modesty and shame. As a third example, on page 111, the Protestant theologian Kierkegaard is quoted as having written: “Either we are contemporaries of Jesus, or we can have nothing at all to do with it.” This leaves one with only a vague notion of what Kierkegaard was trying to say, but Catholic youth are not well-served through imprecise or vague writings that are put on par with quotations from Church Fathers, Doctors, Popes and Saints.

Like so many things in YOUCAT, the selected quotations give the impression that the document was created to produce a certain off-beat touch to make the Catechism “cool” for young people. But this is ultimately insulting to the many Catholic young people who want to know and understand the Truth and who resent being offered gimmicks in place of solid teaching.

Since God saw our misery, he "delivered us from the dominion of

path of love.

To many of<strong style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> them Jesus shows a special way; he invites them to<strong style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> remain unmarried “for the sake of the kingdom of<strong style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> heaven” (Mt 19:12). [1618–1620]<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Many people who live alone suffer from loneliness, which they perceive
only as a lack and a disadvantage. Yet a person who does not have to
care for a spouse or a family also enjoys freedom and independence and
has time to do meaningful and important things that a married person
would never get to. Maybe it is God’s will that he should care for
people for whom no one else cares. Not uncommonly God even calls such a
person to be especially close to him. This is the case when one senses a
desire to renounce marriage “for the sake of the kingdom of heaven”. Of
course a Christian vocation can never mean despising marriage or
sexuality. Voluntary celibacy can be practiced only in love and out of
love, as a powerful sign that God is
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">more important than anything
else. The unmarried person renounces a sexual relationship but not love;
full of longing he goes out to meet Christ the bridegroom who is coming
(Mt 25:6).

Augustine calls the Holy Spirit “The quiet guest of our soul”. Anyone who wants to sense his presence must be quiet. Often this Guest speaks very softly within us and with us, for instance, in the voice of our conscience or through other interior and exterior
promptings. Being a “temple of the Holy Spirit” means being there, body and soul, for this Guest, for God in us. Our body is therefore God’s living room, so to speak.
The more receptive we are to the Holy Spirit in us, the more he becomes the master of our life, the sooner he will bestow on us even today his charisms for the upbuilding of the Church. Why is the Church more than an institution?

The Church is more than an institution because she is a mystery that is simultaneously human and divine. [770–773, 779]
True love does not blind a person but rather makes him see. With
regard to the Church, this is precisely the case: Viewed from outside,
the Church is only a historical institution with historical
achievements, but also mistakes and even crimes—a Church of sinners. But
that is not looking deep enough. After all, Christ became so involved
with us sinners that he never abandons his Church, even if we were to
betray him daily. This inseparable union of the human and the divine, of
sin and grace, is the mystery of the Church. Seen with the eyes of
faith, the Church is therefore indestructibly holy.

The violent death of Jesus did not come about through tragic external circumstances. Jesus was “delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23). So that we children of sin and death might have life, the Father in heaven “made him to be sin who knew no sin” (2 Cor 5:21). The magnitude of the sacrifice that God the Father asked of his Son, corresponded to the of Christ’s obedience: “And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? no, for this purpose I have come to this hour” (Jn 12:27). On both sides,God's love for men proved itself to the very end on the Cross. [599–609, 620]
In order to save us from death, god embarked on a dangerous mission: He introduced a “medicine of immortality” (st. Ignatius of Antioch) into our world of death—his son Jesus Christ. The Father and the son were inseparable in this mission, willing and yearning to take the utmost upon themselves out of love for man. god willed to make an exchange so as to save us forever. He wanted to give us his eternal life, so that we might experience his joy, and wanted to suffer our death, our despair, our abandonment, our death, so as to share with us in everything. so as to love us to the end and beyond. Christ’s death is the will of the Father but not his final word. since Christ died for us, we can exchange our death for his life.

"The ability to give answers to questions regarding one’s own faith has become much more urgent now than in my generation. In the Catechism, which is simply an attempt to present the Catholic Faith, there may be much that people will have difficulty to accept. Some things will seem foreign or contradictory to the way we think today.
But I think that one of the most important tasks of such a book and the work related to it is learning to deal with challenging topics."
Faith needs community. The YOUCAT was developed through a joint effort and it should also promote and encourage community. If a community wants to be more than a social gathering, if it wants to be a community of faith, then it needs a common basis. Read and study YOUCAT together!
Study groups also exist on Facebook! Get involved!
YOUCAT fits well into youth groups, summer camps and confirmation classes!
YOUCAT is ideal for religion classes and Sunday schools!
YOUth CATechism
YOUr CATechism
YOU CATholic
and maybe even
YOUth CATholicism
So, YOU are challenged by faith, it's YOUR catechism, make it YOUR own, it's YOUR faith that has been given to you, so make it yours! This is about YOU, YOU are wanted, YOU are needed. Furthermore, youth refers not only to those young in age but also to those young in faith.
